Bikini History

swimsuit model

1907 - Did you know it was an Australian woman who started the swimwear revolution? Billed as the "Australian Mermaid" the swimmer Annette Kellerman caused a bit of a stir when arrested in the US for wearing a loose, one piece swimsuit that later became generally accepted as women's swimwear. This event began to point to the role the swimsuit would play in challenging society's notions of morality.

1946 - The bikini was invented, surprisingly by a man! The French designer Louis Reard named his invention after a few small South Pacific islands called Bikini Atoll, were the US had established a nuclear test site. The bikini was introduced at a fashion show in Paris, after which the swimwear world has never been the same.

1956 - The bikini starts to create excitement and increase popularity amongst French actresses, such as the stunning Brigitte Bardot who in 1956 wore a frilly style in the movie And God Created Women.

1960 - Finally the bikini begins to become popular in Brazil, Europe and the US due to the socio-cultural revolution of the time, being a means for women to express freedom in the search for independency.

1974 - The creation of Lycra transforms swimwear: from wet and droopy to sleek and sensational. "A bathing suit must look good dry or wet. It must be attractive day or night and needs to look good at the pool, Jacuzzi, lake, river, ocean, spa, and on a cruise."

1980 - Brazil transforms the bikini into a style that enhances a woman's beauty as opposed to hiding it. Commercialisation gets huge with a great variety of styles, colours and fabrics.

1990 - Europe takes on some Brazilian styles, colours and fabrics, but still maintains the large and not very sensual cuts.

2003 - The world fashion surrenders to the sensuality of the Brazilian style and Two Bums Bikinis comes to Australia, bringing the beauty and sensuality of the Brazilian bikinis straight to Australian women. The media, the catwalks and the general public explore the beauty of the women's figure.
Every woman deserves sexy bikinis!

2004 - The Australian beach culture rapidly adopts the Brazilian style and more Australian women take to the Brazilian bikini cut, exploring their sensuality and freedom and having a great time!
